Blendy Knits

Anda's Beardy Pattern (crochet)

My brother Andrew is a prize-winning snowboarder, and apparently this kind of crocheted thing is a popular fashion accessory on the mountain.  He has been pestering me for ages to make him one of these, so guess what he got for an early Christmas present before he jet-setted off to spend the next few months chasing the snow around the northern hemisphere.  By all accounts, Anda’s Beardy has made him even more popular among his friends, and they all want one too.  Make your own!

The beauty of this Beardy is that it has toggles which means it can be attached to any crochet hat.  And it takes hardly any time to make, so if you need a quick last minute gift idea, this could be it!

Here is the pattern - you don't have to add it to the shopping cart - it's free!

Wool: I used Knitsch 4ply Davey Jones, double stranded.
Hook: 4mm
You also need two wooden toggles

Note: every row begins by skipping the stitch at the base of the 3 chain you make at the turn.

Abbrev:
ch – chain
sc – single crochet
dc – double crochet
sk1 – skip one stitch
sl st – slip stitch

1. chain 55
2. in 4th ch from hook, dc. Then dc in every ch to end. Turn.
3. 3ch. dc to end. Turn.
4. 3ch, dc22, ch7, dc23 (should be the end of the row). Turn.
5-7. 3ch, sk1, dc to second to last stitch, sk1, dc. Turn.
8. 3ch, sk1, dc along to align with 1 stitch past the left side of the mouth opening. sl st to next stitch. Turn.
9. 3ch, sk1, dc along to align with 1 stitch past the other side of the mouth opening. sl st to next stitch. Turn.
10-13. 3ch, sk1, dc across stitches just worked, then work the loop from the 3ch and the next stitch together. dc4. sl st to next stitch. Turn.
14-15. 3ch, sk1, dc across stitches just worked, then work the loop from the 3ch and the next stitch together. dc until end. Turn.
Bind off.

Finishing: sc along the side edges.  Sew toggles at the top corners, and they can attach to any crochet hat by poking the toggles between the stitches.

Note: I used just over half a skein of Knitsch wool, so when I made a second Beardy, I changed to one strand Knitsch and one strand 4ply black when I got past the chin turn.  Apparently I hit the snowboarder-fashion jackpot with that choice, because it looks like a browny-black beard underneath the chin!
